چکیده

Genetically diabetic db/db mice show greater neural and behavioral responses to sugars than lean control mice. The present study examined chorda tympani responses of db/db mice to nonsugar sweeteners and their inhibition by a sweet response inhibitor, gurmarin. The results showed that responses to sucrose, saccharin, glycine,l-alanine, andd-tryptophan, but not tod-phenylalanine, were ∼1.5 times greater in db/db mice than in control mice. Treatment of the tongue with gurmarin suppressed responses to these sweeteners in db/dband control mice, but the extent of suppression was considerably smaller in db/db mice. The magnitudes of gurmarin-sensitive components of the response to sweeteners in db/db mice were not significantly different from those in control mice, whereas the magnitudes of gurmarin-insensitive components in db/db mice were about twice as large as those in control mice. These results suggest that the enhancement of chorda tympani responses in db/db mice to sucrose and other nonsugar sweeteners may occur through gurmarin-insensitive membrane components.

Enhanced responses of the chorda tympani nerve to sugars in the ventromedial hypothalamic obese rat.

Sweet taste sensitivity in obese rats with lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) was studied by examining chorda tympani nerve responses to various taste stimuli including sugars. In the early progressive phase of obesity (2 wk after creating VMH lesions), there was no significant difference in the nerve responses to any taste stimulus between sham-operated and VMH-lesioned rats. In co...

ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF THE CHORDA TYMPANI NERVE

The author studied anatomical variations of the origin of the chorda tympani nerve from the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. The studies were performed on 200 specimens of human temporal bone. It was found that the chorda tympani may arise from the facial nerve in three levels: most commonly from the mid third of its mastoid segment (70%), less commonly from the proximal third (20%), an...

Sweet taste responses of mouse chorda tympani neurons: existence of gurmarin-sensitive and -insensitive receptor components.

Inhibitory effects of gurmarin (gur) on responses to sucrose and other sweeteners of single fibers of the chorda tympani nerve in C57BL mice were examined. Of 30 single fibers that strongly responded to 0. 5 M sucrose but were not or to lesser extent responsive to 0.1 M NaCl, 0.01 M HCl, and 0.02 M quinine HCl (sucrose-best fibers), 16 fibers showed large suppression of responses to sucrose and...

Primate sense of taste: behavioral and single chorda tympani and glossopharyngeal nerve fiber recordings in the rhesus monkey, Macaca mulatta.

The responses of 51 chorda tympani proper (CT) and 33 glossopharyngeal (NG) neural taste units from the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) were recorded during stimulation of either the anterior (CT) or posterior (NG) part of the tongue with 26 stimuli that taste salty, umami, sour, bitter, and sweet to humans. In the CT, hierarchical cluster analysis separated four major clusters. The N and S clus...

Low environmental temperature modulates gustatory nerve activity and behavioral responses to NaCl in rats.

We studied the effects of cold ambient temperature on chorda tympani nerve responses to taste stimuli such as sucrose, NaCl, quinine HCl (QHCl), and HCl in rats. The electrophysiological recordings of the whole chorda tympani nerves from control (22°C) and cold-exposed (4°C) rats revealed that the responses to sucrose, HCl, and QHCl were unaffected by cold exposure. In contrast, the nerve respo...
